Palou coasted to his pit box and then lost additional time when the No. 10 Honda initially failed to restart.

He eventually returned to the race but finished 17th, his second result outside the top seven this season.

While Ganassi’s gamble fell apart, Newgarden’s race began coming toward him.

The Penske driver moved to the front during the closing stages and found himself engaged in one of the best battles of the night with Rasmussen.

Following a restart on Lap 212, Rasmussen attacked Newgarden for the lead and made a move underneath him entering Turn 1 on Lap 215.

Newgarden responded four laps later, driving past Rasmussen in Turn 3 to reclaim the position.

Rasmussen wasn’t finished.

He again went underneath Newgarden in Turn 1 on Lap 220, but the Penske driver immediately countered one lap later with another move in Turn 3.

This time, Newgarden stayed in front.

Ericsson moved past Rasmussen for second on Lap 225 and began closing on Newgarden, but another caution arrived almost immediately when Caio Collet encountered trouble after running one of the strongest races of his rookie season.

Collet had led seven laps and remained a top-five contender before smoke began trailing from his A.J. Foyt Enterprises Chevrolet on Lap 226.

The caution created one final strategic decision.

Several cars further down the order headed to pit road for fresh Firestone tires, while the leading eight drivers elected to remain on track and protect their track position.

McLaughlin was among those who pitted and immediately used the fresher tires to charge from ninth to fifth following the Lap 234 restart.

But the tire advantage wasn’t enough to reach the leaders.

At the front, Newgarden executed the restart cleanly and maintained a narrow advantage over Ericsson.

Ericsson remained within approximately half a second over much of the final 10 laps but never got close enough to make a serious move.

Newgarden crossed the line first to secure another Gateway victory and continue his remarkable record on short ovals.

Ericsson’s runner-up finish represented his best result of the season and came after leading more laps than any other driver.

Rasmussen also delivered his strongest performance of 2026 in third, backing up his late fight for the victory with a podium result for Ed Carpenter Racing.

VeeKay finished fourth to earn Juncos Hollinger Racing its best result of the season, while McLaughlin’s late charge carried him to fifth.

Kyle Kirkwood finished sixth and limited the championship damage created by Palou’s difficult night.

David Malukas took seventh for Team Penske, followed by Will Power in eighth and Marcus Armstrong in ninth.

Christian Lundgaard completed the top 10 for Arrow McLaren.

2026 championship advantage.

Kirkwood’s sixth-place result cut Palou’s lead to 49 points after nine races, keeping the Andretti driver within striking distance as the championship moved toward Road America.

But the night belonged to Newgarden.

Even while still recovering from a lower-leg injury sustained during the Indianapolis 500 two weeks earlier, the two-time series champion once again demonstrated why World Wide Technology Raceway has become one of his most successful venues.

Newgarden now has 15 career victories on ovals shorter than 1.5 miles and six wins at Gateway alone.

In a race featuring weather delays, fuel gambles, constant passing and repeated battles for the lead, Newgarden once again found himself in the same familiar position when it mattered most — out front.

Josef Newgarden reinforced his status as INDYCAR’s
