The incident damaged the left-front wing of the No. 7 Chevrolet and deflated a tire, forcing Lundgaard to pit on Lap 2 for repairs, tires and fuel.

With the Dane effectively removed from the conventional strategy, Arrow McLaren began working on an alternative plan.

At the front, Palou initially appeared to have the race under control.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver started from pole for the fifth consecutive race and quickly established an advantage, leading Marcus Armstrong by more than four seconds by Lap 13.

Palou and Armstrong made their first stops on Lap 14, but the race was soon disrupted when Romain Grosjean lost a wheel following his own pit stop, bringing out the first full-course caution.

Felix Rosenqvist, who had remained on track longer than the early leaders, benefited from the timing of the yellow and emerged ahead of Palou when the race resumed.

Palou remained firmly in contention until his second stop on Lap 29.

Entering pit road while running near the front, Palou exceeded the speed limit and was handed a drive-through penalty.

The mistake dropped the four-time series champion deep into the field and appeared to eliminate him from contention for a fourth career Road America victory.

Another caution immediately changed the situation.

Christian Rasmussen stopped on track on Lap 30, allowing Palou to close back toward the field after serving his penalty and giving teams another opportunity to reshuffle their strategies.

While Palou began working his way forward, Armstrong gradually emerged as the driver best positioned to win the race.

The Meyer Shank Racing driver, who had qualified third despite battling illness throughout the weekend, cycled into the lead and controlled the closing portion of the race as the final pit sequence unfolded.

Lundgaard’s alternative strategy began paying off at the same time.

He inherited the lead for the first time on Lap 43 when Armstrong, Malukas and Rahal made their final stops.

By Lap 45, Lundgaard had built a margin of more than 11 seconds over Rosenqvist before making his own final stop.

A quick 7.1-second service from Arrow McLaren allowed Lundgaard to return to the track directly behind Armstrong and just ahead of Malukas.

Malukas used warmer tires to pass Lundgaard shortly afterward, but the Arrow McLaren driver quickly regrouped.

Lundgaard repassed Malukas for second on Lap 49 and began cutting into Armstrong’s advantage.

With five laps remaining, Armstrong still held a lead of nearly three seconds and appeared headed toward the first victory of his INDYCAR career.

Then everything changed.

The No. 66 Meyer Shank Racing Honda suddenly began losing power.

Lundgaard closed rapidly as Armstrong’s engine started sputtering, sweeping past for the lead on Lap 52.

Armstrong’s car finally lost power completely in Turn 5 one lap later, bringing out a caution and ending what had been one of his strongest INDYCAR performances.

The yellow set up a one-lap sprint to the finish.

Lundgaard controlled the restart and immediately prevented Malukas from mounting a serious challenge for the victory.

The drama instead developed behind them.

Rahal and Power were fighting for the final podium position when Power attempted to move alongside Rahal approaching Canada Corner.

The two made contact, sending Rahal into the gravel trap and bringing out the caution that ended the race.

Lundgaard crossed the line first to complete an extraordinary recovery from the opening-lap incident.

The victory was the third of his INDYCAR career and his second since joining Arrow McLaren, following his win on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course earlier in the season.

Malukas finished second, earning his third runner-up result of 2026 as he continues searching for his first career INDYCAR victory.

Power was credited with third following the final-lap incident, matching his best finish of the season with Andretti Global.

Simpson produced a season-best fourth-place result, while Palou’s recovery to fifth limited the damage from his pit-lane penalty.

Alexander Rossi finished sixth, followed by Scott McLaughlin, Felix Rosenqvist, Santino Ferrucci and Kyle Kirkwood.

2026 XPEL Grand Prix at Road America Top 10

Christian Lundgaard — Arrow
