O’Ward Wins 2026 Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio as Arrow McLaren Scores Historic 1-2

Pato O’Ward ended his winless start to the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season in commanding fashion, defeating teammate Christian Lundgaard to lead Arrow McLaren to its first-ever 1-2 finish in the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

O’Ward took advantage of a rare mistake from Lundgaard on Lap 42 and controlled the second half of the caution-free 90-lap race, crossing the line 0.9877 seconds ahead of the polesitter.

Kyle Kirkwood charged from 10th to finish third for Andretti Global, while Rinus VeeKay delivered another strong result for Juncos Hollinger Racing in fourth.

Championship leader Alex Palou completed the top five after starting eighth.

The victory was O’Ward’s first of the season, his second at Mid-Ohio in three years and the 10th of his INDYCAR career.

Arrow McLaren had established itself as the team to beat before the green flag, with Lundgaard claiming pole and O’Ward qualifying alongside him on the front row.

Lundgaard controlled the opening stint immediately.

Starting on Firestone’s primary tire, the No. 7 Chevrolet maintained an advantage of approximately one to two seconds over O’Ward through the first 25 laps, with David Malukas running third for Team Penske.

Behind them, Palou began working forward from eighth.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver gained a position on the opening lap and moved past Christian Rasmussen before eventually climbing into fourth ahead of Will Power.

But while Palou was making progress, the two Arrow McLaren cars were steadily separating themselves from the field.

O’Ward attempted to gain ground through the first major pit sequence by stopping one lap earlier than Lundgaard on Lap 27.

Lundgaard responded one lap later and retained the lead, emerging approximately 1.3 seconds ahead of his teammate.

The race remained firmly under Lundgaard’s control until traffic began playing a role approaching the halfway point.

With the leaders working through slower cars, O’Ward closed to within half a second by Lap 41.

One lap later, the opportunity arrived.

Lundgaard ran deep through the opening section of the course and drifted wide exiting Turn 2, allowing O’Ward to build momentum down the straight.

The teammates ran side-by-side through Turn 4 and made contact before O’Ward emerged with the preferred line into Turn 5.

By the time the pair reached Thunder Valley, O’Ward had completed the pass and taken the lead.

It proved to be the decisive move of the afternoon.

Lundgaard remained close after the second pit sequence, with the two McLarens separated by less than a second through much of the middle portion of the race.

VeeKay and Kirkwood also began closing as strategy converged.

O’Ward then created another advantage during the final round of stops.

Lundgaard, VeeKay and Kirkwood all pitted on Lap 64, while O’Ward remained on track for two additional laps.

The clean air allowed the No. 5 Chevrolet to build enough of a margin to emerge from his final stop with a 2.8-second advantage.

From there, Lundgaard began cutting into the gap, but O’Ward never gave him a realistic opportunity to attack.

The margin fell to approximately one second with six laps remaining, but O’Ward maintained control and completed the full 90 laps without another mistake.

The result marked Arrow McLaren’s first 1-2 finish in INDYCAR competition and gave Chevrolet a sweep of the top two positions at Honda’s home race.

Lundgaard’s runner-up finish continued an outstanding road-course season.

The Dane entered Mid-Ohio having already won at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course and Road America, and his second-place finish added another major points haul to his championship campaign.

Kirkwood produced one of the strongest drives of the race to complete the podium.

After a disappointing qualifying session left him 10th on the grid, the Andretti Global driver steadily worked through the field and emerged as the highest-finishing Honda-powered entry.

The result was also Kirkwood’s first career INDYCAR road-course podium.

VeeKay finished fourth after starting sixth, continuing a strong run for Juncos Hollinger Racing and matching his result from World Wide Technology Raceway.

Palou finished fifth after never showing the dominant pace that had defined much of the opening half of his season.

The four-time champion still gained three positions from his starting spot and limited the damage in the standings, finishing 7.5453 seconds behind O’Ward.

Will Power continued his recent improvement with sixth for Andretti Global, followed by Christian Rasmussen in seventh.

David Malukas finished eighth after losing time during a slow pit stop, while Josef Newgarden placed ninth.

Nolan Siegel gave Arrow McLaren three cars inside the top 10 with a 10th-place finish.

Marcus Ericsson endured one of the more difficult races of the afternoon.

The Andretti Global driver started seventh but stalled during an early pit stop and never recovered, eventually finishing 21st.

Scott Dixon also struggled in his final Mid-Ohio appearance as a Chip Ganassi Racing driver, finishing 17th at a circuit where he has won seven times.

2026 Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Top his deficit to 94 points.

With seven races remaining, the championship picture is beginning to look significantly different than it did earlier in the season.

Palou remains in control, but Arrow McLaren’s pace at Mid-Ohio showed that the competition is closing.

For O’Ward, the victory represented more than simply ending a 15-race winless streak.

After a difficult opening half of the season without a podium finish, Mid-Ohio delivered the type of complete weekend Arrow McLaren had been searching for.

Strong qualifying.

Clean pit stops.

No strategic mistakes.

And when Lundgaard finally left the door open, O’Ward was ready to take
