However, the goal was overturned following a successful Dallas challenge for offside.

Damon Severson eventually put Columbus on the scoreboard at 6:21, finishing an opportunity created by Zach Werenski near the goal line.

The Blue Jackets continued searching for the equalizer, but Oettinger protected the narrow advantage before Arttu Hyry scored into an empty net in the final second.

Offensive Production Remains a Concern

The loss continued a challenging opening month for Columbus, which has scored 28 goals through 12 games while allowing 39.

Its offensive average of 2.33 goals per game has placed additional pressure on a team still working to establish a consistent identity under Bowness.

Special teams have contributed to the difficulty.

Columbus has converted just four of 31 power-play opportunities, a 12.9 percent success rate, while allowing 10 power-play goals on 37 opposing chances.

The Blue Jackets have nevertheless found individual bright spots.

Kent Johnson has emerged as the team’s leading offensive contributor with seven goals and 12 points through 12 games, while Werenski has supplied 10 assists from the blue line.

Adam Fantilli has also provided important moments, including an overtime winner against the Vegas Golden Knights on October 24.

However, four of Columbus’ five victories have required overtime or a shootout. The club has yet to establish the type of consistent regulation-time performance needed to gain ground in the Metropolitan Division.

Encouraging Performances Without Results

The Dallas defeat followed a similar outcome in Carolina two nights earlier, where Columbus recovered from a three-goal deficit to pull within one before falling 3-2.

Those losses came after back-to-back overtime victories over Vegas and Philadelphia, results that briefly suggested the Blue Jackets were beginning to build momentum.

The performances have left Bowness balancing the positives of improved effort with the reality of a losing record.

Columbus has demonstrated an ability to respond when trailing, but the next stage of its development will require sharper starts, more effective special teams and better finishing when opportunities emerge.

The challenge becomes immediate Tuesday when the Colorado Avalanche visit Nationwide Arena, beginning a stretch that also includes another meeting with Dallas on Thursday and a trip to Buffalo on Friday.

For a team seeking to climb back into playoff contention, the margins are already becoming important.

The Blue Jackets have shown enough to suggest they can compete with stronger opponents. Their next task is finding a way to turn those performances into victories before the early-season deficit becomes more difficult to overcome.

The Columbus Blue Jackets closed October with another frustrating result, falling 3-1 to the Dallas Stars on Saturday despite controlling much of the offensive pressure.
