Alex Palou Holds Off Josef Newgarden to Win 2026 Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix at Nashville

Alex Palou moved another step closer to a fourth consecutive NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship with a victory in the 2026 Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix, holding off Josef Newgarden through the closing laps at Nashville Superspeedway.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver started fourth and took control following a perfectly timed pit stop shortly before the race’s second caution, eventually leading the final 95 laps of the 225-lap event.

Newgarden remained within striking distance throughout the final stint but could not find a way past the No. 10 Honda, finishing 0.8731 seconds behind Palou.

David Malukas completed the podium after an impressive recovery from 25th on the grid, while Scott McLaughlin gave Team Penske three cars inside the top four.

Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist completed the top five for Meyer Shank Racing.

The victory was Palou’s fifth of the 2026 season and the 24th of his INDYCAR career. It was also his first win at Nashville Superspeedway and only the third oval victory of his career.

The race was originally scheduled for Sunday evening but was postponed until Monday after severe weather prevented track drying from being completed.

Extreme heat then forced INDYCAR officials to shorten the race from its originally scheduled 300 laps to 225, creating a different strategic challenge for teams across the field.

Kyle Kirkwood led the field to green from pole and controlled the opening 22 laps before the first round of pit stops began reshuffling the order.

Malukas quickly emerged as one of the biggest stories of the afternoon.

After crashing heavily in practice and requiring a hospital visit Saturday, the Team Penske driver started last but moved rapidly through the field on an alternative strategy.

Malukas cycled into the lead by Lap 33 and remained there through Lap 60 before teammate McLaughlin moved to the front.

The changing pit cycles continued to rotate several drivers through the lead, with Kirkwood, Palou, Rosenqvist and Will Power all spending time out front.

Palou, however, initially struggled with the balance of his car.

Adjustments during his early stops gradually improved the No. 10 Honda, putting the championship leader in position to capitalize when the pivotal moment arrived on Lap 123.

Palou entered pit road only moments before the pits were closed as Scott Dixon and Alexander Rossi collided.

The incident brought out the second caution of the race.

Newgarden, McLaughlin, Kirkwood and Rinus VeeKay were among the front-running drivers who had not made their stops before the caution and were forced to remain on track until pit road reopened.

That allowed Palou to cycle into the lead on Lap 131.

He would not surrender it again.

Malukas was one of the drivers hurt by the caution timing.

After leading 59 laps through the opening half of the race, he had stopped immediately before the yellow and dropped to 14th for the Lap 139 restart.

The setback did little to slow his charge.

Malukas methodically worked his way back through the field, reaching fourth by the time the final restart arrived.

A third and final caution was triggered when rookie Dennis Hauger made contact with the SAFER Barrier in Turn 3 on Lap 181.

That set up the decisive run to the finish and created an important tire-strategy split among the leaders.

Newgarden, Malukas and Rosenqvist selected Firestone’s softer alternate tire for the final stint, while Palou and strategist Barry Wanser elected to stay with the harder primary compound.

On paper, the decision appeared to leave Palou vulnerable.

The alternate tire provided greater initial grip, and Newgarden immediately closed onto the rear of the Ganassi car following the Lap 194 restart.

For the next 15 laps, the gap between the leading pair remained measured in tenths of a second.

Newgarden repeatedly positioned himself within striking distance but could not complete a move as Palou adjusted his line around the 1.33-mile concrete oval to protect the lead.

As the stint progressed, the balance began shifting back toward Palou.

The more durable primary tires maintained their performance while the alternates began losing some of their initial advantage.

Lapped traffic entered the equation during the final five laps, but Palou navigated it cleanly and finally began opening a small margin over Newgarden.

The Team Penske driver stayed close enough to keep the outcome uncertain but never received a final opportunity to attack.

Palou crossed the line less than a second ahead to claim another major victory in his championship defense.

Malukas finished just 1.2198 seconds behind the winner after gaining 22 positions from his starting spot.

His third-place result completed one of the strongest recovery drives of the season and moved him into second place in the championship standings.

McLaughlin finished fourth after leading 32 laps, giving Team Penske three of the top four positions despite being denied the victory.

Rosenqvist took fifth after starting 17th and briefly running at the front during the pit sequence.

Marcus Ericsson finished sixth for Andretti Global, followed by Mid-Ohio winner Pato O’Ward in seventh.

Mick Schumacher earned an eighth-place finish for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, with Kyffin Simpson ninth for Chip Ganassi Racing.

Kirkwood completed the top 10 after starting from pole and leading 24 laps.

The victory delivered another major swing in Palou’s favor in the championship battle.

Malukas moved into second place in the standings but left Nashville 83 points behind Palou, while Kirkwood dropped to third at 87 points back.

With only six races remaining, Palou now holds more than a full race weekend’s worth of points over his closest challenger.

The scale of the advantage is particularly significant considering the consistency that has defined his championship runs.

Palou has finished inside the top five in 23 of his last 29 INDYCAR starts and has won 13 of the last 29 races dating back to the beginning of the 2025 season.

Nashville also demonstrated that his dominance is no longer confined primarily to road and street courses.

Newgarden and Team Penske entered the weekend as the expected oval benchmarks, and Penske ultimately placed three cars inside the top four.

But when the race was decided, none of them could dislodge Palou from the lead.

A fortunate caution helped put him there.

The strategy call kept him there.

And over the final 32 laps, Palou did the rest.
