Alex Palou Wins Chaotic 2026 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix

Alex Palou converted pole position into his fourth victory of the 2026 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season, holding off Kyle Kirkwood through a caution-filled Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix on the streets of downtown Detroit.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver led 71 of the 100 laps and survived a series of late restarts to beat Kirkwood by 3.0584 seconds, while Graham Rahal completed the podium for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

Pato O’Ward and Christian Lundgaard finished fourth and fifth for Arrow McLaren, with Indianapolis 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist recovering from 16th on the grid to take sixth.

Palou started from pole but was forced to work for the victory as differing tire strategies and six full-course cautions repeatedly reshuffled the field.

Will Power emerged as one of Palou’s primary challengers during the opening half of the race and led 18 laps after starting alongside the Ganassi driver on the front row. Christian Lundgaard and Scott McLaughlin also spent time applying pressure near the front as the first pit cycle developed.

The decisive moment arrived during the final round of stops.

Palou pitted at the end of Lap 63, switching from Firestone’s alternate tire to the primary compound. Several contenders, including Kirkwood, remained on track in an attempt to extend their stints.

Three laps later, the complexion of the race changed when Santino Ferrucci made contact with Rinus VeeKay in Turn 5. VeeKay spun, bringing out a full-course caution and handing Palou a significant strategic advantage.

Kirkwood, who had inherited the lead, was still required to make his final stop and came to pit road under caution on Lap 69. The Andretti Global driver also had to finish the race on the alternate tire.

Palou returned to the front when the sequence was completed, but Kirkwood quickly emerged as his main threat.

Using the additional grip of the softer compound, Kirkwood worked his way back toward the No. 10 Honda and had closed to within striking distance by Lap 79.

His momentum was interrupted when Ferrucci stopped with a mechanical issue in Turn 4 on Lap 80, triggering another caution.

Palou maintained the lead at the restart, but Kirkwood continued to apply pressure and forced the Ganassi driver into a significant lock-up on Lap 88.

Palou recovered without losing the position and began rebuilding his advantage before another incident brought the field back together.

Alexander Rossi made contact with Romain Grosjean approaching Turn 3 on Lap 91, sending Grosjean into the outside wall and creating the sixth and final caution of the afternoon.

The race resumed on Lap 93, giving Kirkwood one final opportunity.

Palou immediately created a gap on the restart and steadily pulled clear over the final laps to secure the 23rd victory of his INDYCAR career.

The result continued an exceptional run for the four-time series champion, who has now won four of the opening eight races of the 2026 season.

Behind the leading pair, Rahal produced one of the strongest drives of the afternoon.

Starting 12th, the veteran stayed clear of the incidents around him and climbed nine positions to finish third, earning his third podium of the season.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing also placed Louis Foster seventh, giving the team two cars inside the top seven.

O’Ward advanced from seventh to fourth for Arrow McLaren, while teammate Lundgaard completed the top five after running near the front for much of the afternoon.

Rosenqvist followed in sixth after gaining 10 positions from his starting spot.

Marcus Ericsson finished eighth for Andretti Global, ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyffin Simpson and Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden.

Newgarden produced one of the biggest recoveries of the race, climbing from 21st to 10th.

The afternoon was less successful for several other front-running contenders.

Power’s race unraveled following contact while battling McLaughlin. After leading 18 laps, the Team Penske driver eventually finished 22nd.

Scott Dixon was also eliminated by mechanical trouble, while Christian Rasmussen became the first retirement after completing only nine laps.

Mick Schumacher was involved in another of the race’s late incidents after missing Turn 5 while fighting David Malukas. Schumacher made contact with the barrier, while Malukas was forced wide in avoidance.

Despite the repeated interruptions, the Detroit street circuit produced 173 on-track passes during the 100-lap race.

Palou’s victory also strengthened his position at the top of the championship standings. After eight rounds, he holds a 62-point advantage over Kirkwood as the season moves into its second half.
